Here We Build Together

Who Are We?

  • We are a business development network that supports Kurdish businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs to build and thrive in their start-ups: from ideation through to a viable business.
  • We want to empower Kurds to start and grow business and social enterprises that build on their qualities of perseverance, strength, and resilience.

“Seeing other people achieve their goals, believing in mine, and wanting me to achieve it has created the same motivation in me.”

Saya, Mesopotamian Nights Under Northern Lights

“I have been alone in this world of enterprise for over 10 years. To know more Kurds like me exist outside of normal business and venturing into meaningful impacts makes me super happy!”

Arie, MedPlay

KHL helped me launch Caravel magazine, which I was working on for years.”

Our Background

  • KHL was founded by Belinda Perriman in 2015. Working around the world, Belinda saw how some governments discriminate against their own ‘people of the land’. She was moved by the injustices against tens of millions of Kurdish people in Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey.
  • KHL was set up to encourage and nurture Kurds in London who want to use the characteristics of resilience and perseverance developed in the face of many hardships as building blocks to becoming successful entrepreneurs.
  • KHL has no links to political parties. We believe that greater economic empowerment leads to broader social wellbeing.
  • The idea of a peer-to-peer support network for Kurdish entrepreneurs was born, and the first central London events were held in 2016.
  • In 2018, Zey joined as a member with her marketing business. She is now working closely with Belinda to grow KHL.
  • The greatest strength of the house is the network of like-minded Kurds from all parts of Kurdistan who are supporting one another as entrepreneurs and change-makers.

Our Vision

Our vision is for all Kurds to be thriving here in the UK and beyond. Our network of Kurdish entrepreneurs, supporting one another in growing sustainable projects & businesses, is a contribution towards that economic and social wellbeing.

Our Mission

  • Our mission is to foster, support, and encourage Kurdish entrepreneurs. We do this in two main ways: signposting world-leading resources that are relevant for Kurdish led start-ups and through our Pay It Forward Model in online and offline meetups.
  • We signpost to a wealth of UK events, start-up incubation programmes, and sources of grants, low-interest loans and angel investing funds. We want members of the KHL network to progress their business ideas using the right opportunities for their idea.
  • Through Pay It Forward, we create an environment where all of the members of the house genuinely care about providing value to each other.
  • At KHL, we harness the Kurdish characteristics of perseverance, resilience and strength into starting businesses that last.

In this house, We Build Better Together

Our Values

We respect everyone’s time and efforts through keeping each other accountable in their endeavours.

We convert challenging business processes into applicable methods.

Inclusive of all genders, sexualities, Kurdish regions, languages, and political views – although this isn’t the place to talk politics.

We work together on some KHL projects and support each other with individual projects.

We create an environment of sharing, learning, and asking questions about alternative approaches to building a more impactful business.

We genuinely value the success and aspirations of our members and do our best in supporting them.

Pay It Forward

  • Paying-it-forward is a concept where our members receive support from others for their start-up and business and give support to other members of KHL. The assistance provided and received may depend on the stage of the business.
  • We may provide extensive support if the business is in its idea phase in return for merely sharing a contact or sharing feedback on another member’s idea.
  • For an up and running business, we may help you in finding investment, and you volunteer to mentor in your area of expertise.
  • We create an environment where all of our members do their best to provide value to each other. Our entrepreneurs offer their time, contacts, and expertise, according to their own unique experiences.

Our Team

Belinda founded KHL after a career with a major oil company, initially as a reservoir & economics engineer in Asia and Africa and later as commercial deal lead of M&A, mezzanine financing and clean energy Projects. These projects took her to The Middle East and to the Kurdish regions. She was struck by the injustices suffered, but also by the joy and resilience of the Kurdish people. She is currently a Consultant in the area of capturing & geologically storing carbon emissions from heavy industry (CCS), with a dream to one day see CCS in the Kurdish regions.

Zey started her first business at the age of 18 in marketing. She initially joined the KHL network with her business to meet more like-minded Kurds pursuing non-traditional business’. Later, organising KHL hosted events such as ‘Empowering Kurdish Women Into Business.’ The longer she worked with Belinda, the more she grew passionate about supporting the entrepreneurial growth of young Kurds like her, so she decided to play an active role in KHL. Now she works on a variety of empowerment projects and is the founder of Welaty, a card game in its prelaunch phase, which starts conversations about forced migration.
